The Charles B. Eberhart
Cancer Center at DeKalb Medical Center treats and supports patients
through their battle with cancer. For a number of years, DeKalb Medical Center
has been one of the top hospitals in the state in terms of the number of new
cancer cases diagnosed each year. It has now incorporated all of its cancer
program components into a center with a new physical space, and a widely
expanded offering of services. New programs have been added and new physicians
have joined the medical staff to give the program greater depth and expertise.
The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons validated the
excellence of the program by granting an additional three-year approval to
DeKalb Medical Center as a community hospital comprehensive cancer program. This
Commission was established in 1932 to encourage participants to meet the high
standards necessary for the treatment of cancer. Only one-fifth of the country's
hospitals have been able to achieve approved programs.
The Cancer Center is designed to utilize a
multi-disciplinary team approach to treatment, combining the best of technology
with the most comprehensive support system available anywhere. The structure of
the center is a three-pronged approach to care. An Administrative Cancer
Services Team provides support for strategic planning, marketing and the
procurement of staff and services to run the center. The Cancer Committee is the
multi-disciplinary physician staff component that shapes the programs of the
center. The Cancer Support Team is made up of highly trained ancillary personnel
that designs programs directly related to patient services.

Emory has been a leader in cancer care for more than 60 years. In
1937, with funds from Coca-Cola magnate and philanthropist Robert W. Woodruff, the Winship Memorial Clinic was created as one of the
first clinics in the nation devoted entirely to the care of patients with cancer. The Winship Clinic was named in honor of Woodruff's
grandfather, Robert Winship. The gift that established the Cancer Clinic marked the first-ever gift to Emory University from Woodruff. By
1985, the Winship Cancer Institute was formed. It has assumed a role as an interdisciplinary coordinator of clinical cancer treatment
programs and leader in both laboratory and clinical research.
The Cancer Institute is comprised of six shared facilities providing high technology services which are open to clinicians and researchers
throughout the Emory system. These shared facilities make possible for an entire campus that would be too costly or time consuming for
any one department or hospital. The research conducted at the Cancer Institute facilities includes basic, translational and clinical
research projects. Research programs which fall under the auspices of the Cancer Institute include Cancer Prevention, Oncology Clinical
Research, Pediatric Oncology, Molecular Therapy, Immunology and Cancer Genetics. Membership of the Winship Cancer Institute is
made up of over 200 Emory School of Medicine faculty members from a cross-section of disciplines.

Still in its first decade, the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer
Center (VICC) is already recognized as a leader in cancer prevention, care and research. In 2000 the
VICC was ranked among the top cancer centers in the country in a survey by U.S. News and World
Report -- the youngest National Cancer Institute-designated facility to be included among the
nation's most elite.
Only a handful of centers in the Southeast have earned NCI designation, and the VICC is the only one
in Tennessee dedicated to providing the most promising therapies and to advancing research in all
types of cancer in adults and children.
Patients at the VICC are among the first anywhere to profit from new discoveries, largely due to the Center's emphasis on
"translational research." This means that VICC physicians and scientists are
involved in rapidly bringing innovative discoveries from the laboratory to the hospital or clinic, where they can directly benefit patients. Researchers then
use lessons learned in the clinic back in the laboratory, to confirm and extend their research.
